Decluttering to Shift Energy

December brought me more free time than I'm used to.

But instead of filling every moment with activity (my usual pattern!), I found myself drawn to a home project I'd been avoiding for over three years: the loft.

When we moved into this house, the loft became the kids' area. The space was really perfect for them because it was cozy and a great area to hang out and play.

However… When my kids eventually moved out, they left behind complete and utter chaos. I'm talking boxes, bags, and stuff everywhere! Pure disarray.

For three and a half years, I never went up there. Out of sight, out of mind, right?

That's what I thought, but I was so very wrong…

The Invisible Weight We Carry

Even though I couldn't see that clutter because it was far away from my everyday living space (I rarely went to the loft), it was still impacting me. Energetically, I had this massive amount of chaos sitting directly over my head. And I had no idea how much weight it was adding to my life until this past December.

I can't tell you exactly why I went to that loft one day and started rearranging things (possibly restlessness from too much free time), but I'm so glad I listened to that impulse. When I finally cleared the room—with my daughter's help, because most of it was hers and honestly, decluttering can be overwhelming!—I felt something I wasn't expecting.

An energetic lift.

Not just a subtle shift either. This was strong. I suddenly felt lighter, clearer, and more creative. It was like I'd been carrying something heavy without realizing it, and now the weight was gone.

It's so easy to get accustomed to carrying stuff, isn't it? I don't like to use the term "baggage" because it has a negative connotation, but that's often what that weight feels like. We walk around with emotional, physical, energetic "baggage" and it becomes so familiar that we don't realize it's there until the weight lifts.

I had no idea the clutter in that loft had been weighing down my home and myself so heavily.

After clearing items I no longer needed, I decorated the loft, brought in a few purposeful pieces of furniture and decor, and it's now my home office. It's a consecrated space where my work can have its own home instead of being crammed onto the dining room table.

The ripple effects have been incredible.

Energy Wants to Flow

Everything I do in my work is about energy. Shifting energy in family systems through Family Constellations. Helping people focus on their passions through The Passion Test, which brings more life force energy into their days. Transforming energy states through breathwork (my favorite!).

So why was I surprised that physical space affects energy too?

When we declutter, we're not just organizing our belongings. We're creating pathways for energy to move. We're making room for new possibilities. Life can't easily enter a cluttered space: there's nowhere for it to go!

But when you clear the chaos and organize the clutter, life energy happily flows in… And then it keeps flowing.

Once I cleared the loft, I naturally began looking at the rest of my house with fresh, creative eyes. Plants I hadn't moved in three and a half years suddenly "felt" like they needed a shift in location. Spaces that were already functional needed a little sprucing up.

The momentum flowed. One cleared space created energy for the next.

Starting Small

Now, I want to be honest with you. Decluttering can be very overwhelming. My daughter came to help and she could only tolerate working on her stuff in small doses, about 45 minutes at a time before needing a break.

And I get it. When I go through certain things, like papers or sentimental items, I can easily reach my limit at ten minutes.

Well… you don't have to do it all at once.

Start with something easy. Maybe it's one kitchen cabinet. Maybe it's your jewelry box. Maybe it's that one shelf you look at every day and think, "I should really deal with that."

You can even set a timer, work for a chunk of time that feels manageable, and then just stop once the time is up.

Start small and let the process unfold organically. I promise that even if you clear a space the size of a sheet of paper you're going to feel the energy shift. The weight will get lighter.

Then once your space is organized and the energy is flowing, simply follow what feels good.

While I was recreating my loft space, I didn't try to get everything perfect all at once. I asked myself: What's the next step that gives me a little boost of energy?

Maybe it was finding the perfect rug. Maybe it was discovering exactly the right desk on Facebook Marketplace—and I mean exactly what I'd been picturing in my mind. (Once I got clear on the image of what I wanted, things started falling into place almost magically.)

There's no right or wrong. Just follow what excites you. What creates happiness in that space? Bring that in, one thing at a time (or make the room entirely bare if that's what feels good!).

The point is to simply let the flow happen.

Emotional Decluttering

Of course, decluttering isn't only about our physical spaces.

Maybe for you, it's your computer files (I know plenty of people who feel overwhelmed just thinking about that). Maybe it's how you spend your time—all that scrolling that doesn't actually make you feel good. Maybe it's relationships where you need to set stronger boundaries.

For emotional decluttering, my go-to is always breathwork. There's nothing quite like conscious breathing to help release what's stuck, to create inner space for new energy to flow.

Family Constellations is another powerful tool for clearing inherited patterns and emotional weight that you might not even know you're carrying.

And if you're struggling with boundaries, sometimes you just need a mentor to help you find the right words.

That's what I'm here for. Just book a free consultation so we can talk.

Creating Space for New Possibilities

Here's what I want you to take away from my loft revelation:

When we declutter—whether it's a room, our emotions, or our time—we're creating space for new possibilities. We're telling the universe, "I'm ready for more."

If you're feeling sluggish or stuck right now, don't try to change your whole life all at once. Start by decluttering something. Anything. Start small. Follow the energy.

What's important is to start because even the clutter you can't see is affecting you. That closet you never open, that drawer you avoid, that emotional weight you've been carrying for years… All of it is taking up space and blocking the flow of life energy.

What would it feel like to let it go?

One More Tip

I've found that it's easier to release something I like but don't use when I think of someone who would love it.

When you give something to someone who lights up—"Oh, I love this!"—it makes letting go so much easier. They get something they'll actually use, and you get the space you've been needing.

Here's my invitation to you: What's one area of your life that could use some decluttering this month?

It doesn't have to be big. It doesn't have to be perfect. Just take one small step and notice how it feels.

You might be surprised by the energetic shift that follows!
