Awakening to Aliveness

"I feel like I'm finally awake after being asleep for decades."

"I didn't know I could feel this much!"

"I can actually BREATHE."

I often hear similar statements after people attend one of my Rewilding Ceremonies. It always touches me deeply!

Most people go days, weeks, sometimes even years without feeling truly alive. Then, after an hour of breath and dance and just giving themselves permission to let the energy flow in whatever way feels right, they get this look. It’s a look of surprise, wonder, and sometimes even shock because their bodies are finally waking up to their natural states: aliveness.

What strikes me most is that this aliveness isn't something I'm giving them—it's something they're reclaiming that was always theirs, buried beneath layers of conditioning that taught them to deaden their senses, quiet their voices, and tame their natural expression.

This deadening isn't an accident. Our society actually rewards those who can override their body's signals, push through exhaustion, control their emotional expression, and maintain the appearance of "having it all together." We're taught that "being an adult" means containing ourselves and staying composed.

But what if the greatest gift we could give ourselves is permission to break free from all that? What if the path to healing, wholeness, and joy is through reclaiming our wild aliveness?

My Rewilding Discovery

A few years ago, I was asked to facilitate a session for a private retreat. The client couldn't decide if they wanted ecstatic dance or breathwork, so I suggested something radical: "Why not both?"

That spontaneous idea became what I now call the "Rewilding Ceremony"—a powerful hybrid that combines facilitated movement and ecstatic dance flowing into deep breathwork.

By getting energy moving through the body before diving into breathwork, I was able to facilitate a profound awakening in those who attended. Movement awakened the body, dissolved barriers, and then people were able to access deeper states of presence and release during the breathwork portion.

Initially, that ceremony was a one-time thing, but I then got hired by Oliver Niño, known as The Spiritual Activator, to facilitate Rewilding Ceremonies for his retreats in Sedona. Instead of my usual intimate groups, I found myself guiding 70-80 people at once.

What happened at the end of these ceremonies still leaves me in awe.

After each ceremony, I'd look up to find a line of people stretching across the entire hall—waiting to hug me, share their experiences, or simply cry on my shoulder as they processed what they'd just felt.

Since I've been doing breathwork and ecstatic dance for decades now, feeling energy move through my body has become normal for me. These retreats actually helped me realize that I'm taking that normal "everyday" experience for granted because most people don't feel such aliveness. So when they come to one of my Rewilding Ceremonies, it's like a lightbulb clicks on in their head.

"This is what living can feel like?"

YES!

We're absolutely meant to feel alive and energetic and buzzing with life every single day.

The Crisis of Deadened Aliveness

It really saddens me that most people don't feel truly alive as a regular part of their daily experience. We've become accustomed to a sedentary lifestyle, so we go through the motions of existing without fully feeling life.

This deadening isn't just metaphorical—it's literally happening in our bodies. When we continually suppress emotions and natural expressions, we create blockages in our energy flow. We tighten, contract, and eventually, we forget what it feels like to be present and alive in our bodies.

What struck me most about these retreat experiences was seeing how quickly people could reclaim their natural state of aliveness—often in just 90 minutes.

These weren't necessarily people who regularly do inner work. Yet there they were, stomping their feet, jumping for joy, yipping like coyotes, or sobbing with release; they were all reclaiming parts of themselves they had long ago locked away.

So why is movement + vocalization + breath so powerful? Isn't that just mindfulness?

Mindfulness is about bringing awareness to (focusing on) sensations and the present moment, which movement and vocalizing also does. BUT moving and making sound is actually more effective than simply focusing on your current state or whatever you're doing.

People can be mindful and still remain deeply repressed. We can observe our thoughts with detachment while our bodies remain locked in tension and our emotions stay buried under layers of control.

But when we combine intentional movement, vocalization, and breath, that's when we feel that awakening of being alive.

There are a few reasons for this:

  1. We're completely anchored in the present moment: You can't dance in the past or future. You can't vocalize yesterday or tomorrow. You can only breathe right now. This trinity brings you immediately into the present and out of your thoughts.
  2. We bypass the thinking mind: Movement and sound engage the body and primal brain in ways that thinking-based approaches can't do. We don't need to analyze or understand what's happening—we simply need to allow.
  3. We release without a narrative: Often, suppressed energy can move and release without us even being fully aware. You don't need to identify the source of the tension to let it go, just allow the body to do it as you move and breathe.

This is wildly different from our cultural conditioning, isn't it?

I love combining breath with movement and sound because it's an invitation to break free and reclaim your authentic expression.

Simple Ways to Reclaim Your Aliveness

Not everyone can attend a Rewilding Ceremony (though I'd love to see you at one!), but everyone can begin to reclaim their aliveness in simple, consistent ways:

  1. Try a short breathwork session: I start most mornings with just 10 minutes of breathwork using one of my Spotify playlists. I essentially condense a longer 60-minute ceremony into just a few minutes. I breathe, follow the rhythm of the music, and during the peak song (the most intense one), I allow my body to move vigorously—sometimes doing what I call a "tantrum" where I flail, pound the mat, or shake whatever needs shaking.
  2. Move without instruction: Put on a song that moves you and just let your body respond. Don't choreograph or overthink it. Start with any movement, and your body will guide you to what it needs. If self-consciousness creeps in, add some vocalization—make sounds, sigh, hum, or even make nonsense noises. This helps quiet the critical mind.
  3. Spend time in nature: Nothing reconnects us to our aliveness like being surrounded by life itself (especially when it's wild and not pruned). Take off your shoes and feel the earth. Listen to the birds. Touch trees. Breathe deeply.
  4. Sing, chant, or hum: Sound is incredibly powerful for moving energy through the body. You don't need to be "good" at it—just make noise for a few minutes each day and feel what happens.
  5. Shake it out: One of the simplest practices is to stand and shake your entire body for 2-3 minutes. This releases tension, wakes up the nervous system, and brings you immediately into the present moment. You can even make it something you do right after waking up in the morning. Get the energy flowing for the day!

With all of these practices, you don't need to be "perfect," only consistent. Our culture continuously pulls us toward deadening, so we need regular practices that bring us back to aliveness.

Resources for Your Journey

If you're curious to explore this work more deeply, I have several resources that will support you:

  •  Spotify Playlists: I've created dozens of breathwork playlists that you can use for your own practice. While they don't include facilitation, you can use the music to guide your breath and movement. And it's all free, just my gift to you :)
  • Free Trial Membership: I'm currently offering a free week's trial to my Inspired Breath breathwork membership, which includes facilitated breathwork sessions of different lengths. Unlike the Spotify playlists, these include my voice guiding you through the practice, including prompts for movement and vocalization.
  •  Monthly Breath Is Prayer Ceremony: Join my monthly online ceremony where we breathe together as a community. I encourage movement, vocalization, and deep surrender in these powerful group sessions.
  • Personal Mentorship: Sometimes we need a guide to walk alongside us as we reconnect with our aliveness. If you're craving deeper, personalized support on this journey, I offer one-on-one mentorship that's tailored to your unique needs and experiences. Together, we'll explore what's blocking your natural vitality and develop practices that help you reclaim your wild, authentic self. Let's chat!

Your Invitation

Ultimately, what I'm offering through the Rewilding Ceremony and all my offerings is an invitation to reclaim your most natural, wild self—the one that's waiting just below the layers of conditioning and control.

Of course, this isn't about becoming chaotic or unhinged! It's about remembering that you are, at your core, a vibrantly alive being with the capacity to feel deeply, move freely, and express yourself authentically.

Most of us have forgotten this. We've been tamed, domesticated, and taught to contain ourselves in tiny boxes. But that wild aliveness still lives in you, waiting to be remembered.

I've witnessed hundreds of people reconnect with this essential part of themselves, and many of them come to me with tears of relief as they recognize something they've been missing for decades. It's the joy of coming home to themselves.
